Immigrants literally built America, and their struggle to build a better life and achieve social acceptance and economic equity is a continuing saga in the history of our nation. Radiance of the Day, set in the city of Lawrence, spotlights that uncomfortable reality.

In Good Company announces auditions for Radiance of the Day, a new musical play by Ginger Lazarus. The play will be performed as part of a new outdoor Lawrence performing arts festival on September 11 and 12. Rehearsals will begin in early July, and will be held in Lawrence or other nearby location.  Because the performances will be in the afternoon outdoors, we expect all rehearsals starting August 30 will be during daytime hours.

Actors of all backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

CHARACTERS

Kathy Bukowski-Serrano: white, female, middle-aged historian of Lawrence, descendent of Kasia Starosta (Polish/Italian).

Gabe/Gabby Hasim: 20s, Mideast/Asian, parents were refugees from Afghanistan in the ‘80s, grew up in Lawrence. Leader and organizer for immigrant community.

Luz/Luis Quintana: 20s, Latinx, immigrated from DR as a child, grew up in Lawrence undocumented. Superstar student, works at City Hall and beloved by all, but always afraid of the spotlight due to status. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

Ana Quintana: 40s/50s, Latina, Luz/Luis’s parent, elementary school custodian, undocumented, has lived in Lawrence for 15 years. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

Chris Holtz: any race/age/gender, immigration lawyer, works with people facing deportation, etc.

Lokosang family: Refugees from South Sudan, have been living in a camp in Uganda for a couple of years, are relieved to be safe in the US. 1 adult, 2 children aged 10 to 15.

Sophy Chey: 30s-50s, Cambodian, neighbor and friend of Kathy, immigrated in 1980s. Respected business owner.

Pat O’Grady: white, any age. Host of right-wing talk show.

Kasia Starosta: 20s, Polish immigrant, part of the first group of women to walk off job during the Bread and Roses Strike. Passionately committed to strike and to solidarity among immigrant communities.

Italian, French and Arabic translators, as members of the ensemble (knowledge of language not required, but helpful).

Two or three students, aged 12 to 16.

Various ensemble roles.

AUDITION INFORMATION

Persons interested in auditioning may do so either by video submission or in-person. In both circumstances, please prepare a one-minute contemporary monologue, and 32 bars of an uptempo song. Much of the music in the show is from choral traditions and/or be multi-voice-part in nature, so experience with choral singing is a plus.
